Ogopogo

Term 9 stories, 1885 to 1992

Okanagan Lake runs long and narrow through the interior of British Columbia. Something is said to live in it. The Syilx/Secwepemc call it N'ha-a-itk, and Westbank First Nation voices describe a sacred protector spirit. Most people today say Ogopogo. In 1968, Art Folden caught it on film, footage later analysed for journalist Arlene Gaal and shown on Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World. The name travelled too. It lent itself to Igopogo of Lake Simcoe, seen by Lathangue and Williams in 1963, and Ogopogo stands beside Manipogo, photographed on Lake Manitoba in 1962, in Canada's family of lake monsters.
