Okanagan Lake

Place 5 stories, 1926 to 1992

Long and narrow, Okanagan Lake runs through the interior of British Columbia. For generations, people have spoken of something living in its waters. The Syilx/Secwepemc call it N'ha-a-itk, a sacred protector spirit. Most people today call it Ogopogo. In 1968, Art Folden filmed a dark object cutting a wake across the lake. Larry Thal added another film in 1980, during a family holiday off Kelowna. Then came July 18, 1989. Near Bear Creek, on the west shore, Ken Chaplin stood on a low bluff with his father and filmed a blackish thing swimming about 50 meters away.
