A film creature serves as the yardstick for lake monsters. Witnesses and retellers keep reaching for the Creature from the Black Lagoon and its Gill-man. In 1972 the Victoria Daily Times compared the Thetis Lake Monster to it, and later retellings did the same, even after one witness called the story a big lie. The Charles Mill Lake Monster of 1959 draws the same comparison, alongside the Loveland Frog about 100 miles away. Armless and green-eyed, that creature was never found.
