Daniel Loxton, a skeptic writer and editor of Junior Skeptic, went back to old monster stories to find out what really happened. In 2009 he tracked down Russell Van Nice, a witness in the Thetis Lake Monster case of 1972. Van Nice, then 49, called the story a big lie. Loxton also found that a film about a scaled gill-man attacking teenagers at the beach had aired on CHEK-TV in Victoria shortly before the first sighting. In 2021, in Skeptic, he compared drafts of Sanderson's More Things with his private papers on the Clearwater giant penguin. Sanderson had deleted the hoax verdict in red pencil.
