Mansfield appears in the archive as a landmark for two Ohio-area stories. Charles Mill Lake, a flood-control reservoir in Ashland and Richland counties, lies about 10 miles east of it. That lake gave its name to the Charles Mill Lake Monster of 1959. Mansfield returns in the Coyne Helicopter Incident of 1973. Near Mansfield, Yanacsek spotted a red light on the east horizon. It turned toward the helicopter. Coyne dove and radioed the Mansfield tower. After the first contact, the radio went dead for about 10 minutes.
