Brazil's military aviators turn up again and again in the country's strangest cases. In 1952, officers went to Barra da Tijuca, studied shadows and trajectories, and spent weeks trying to fake the flying disc photographs. They failed. In 1969, personnel from the Pirassununga base investigated Tiago Machado's tripod landing, and the case entered SIOANI, the Air Force's UFO investigation system. That file remains closed. In 2022, the FAB said its air-defence radars identified no unknown object after airline pilots reported spiralling lights over Santa Catarina and Porto Alegre.
