Context
Barras is a town in northern Piauí, Brazil. In its rural communities, Cajazeira, Lameirão, Malhada de Pedra, Buriti and Caiçara, residents have a name for what began appearing in 2025. They call it "o fogo". The fire. Field work by Nathan de Moura traced the encounters to March 2025. They peaked in December. Most came around 20:30, sometimes into the early hours.
The chase at Salto de Pedra
Dona Francisca, a farmworker, and her husband Lourival were riding a motorcycle home at about 21:00. Climbing the slope at Salto de Pedra, Francisca saw what she took for a red star. It followed them along a narrow path and flew low over a dip, lighting up the ground. It stopped when they stopped. It followed when they ran. "Corre meu fi que a luz vai pegar nós," Francisca said. Run, my son, the light is going to get us.
They left the motorcycle and sheltered at a neighbour's house. Lourival said the light stopped about 50 metres away, hovering over a jatobá tree. It kept watch until about 01:00. Then it slowly climbed and vanished. "Tudo silencioso," Francisca said. Everything silent. "The thing is big, there's no way it's a drone." The fright sent her blood pressure high enough to need hospital care.
A wave of lights
Dona Cleusa Melo described a multicoloured ball, like a football, about 4 metres away. It fired a huge flash at her. Seu Francisco said a light hovering about 15 metres up followed him and his brother to their door. A woman in Buriti said a light followed her along a roadside fence. "Pode ser de outro mundo." It could be from another world.
Ufologist Flávio Tobler of UPUPI described the pattern. The lights appear at a certain altitude, then come down, getting very close to people. Riders on back roads are "interceptados". Intercepted. An elderly woman said a blinking light came within about three metres, blinking as if it understood or was trying to communicate. Tobler also mentioned reports of silver, shining beings in broad daylight. No source gives any detail.
Investigation
No police, Brazilian Air Force or state agency became involved. Tobler and Luiz Antônio of UPUPI held interviews and a night vigil with an infrared camera. Nathan de Moura's Belém de Arrepiar channel made field visits. Portal Vigília ran at least five articles.
Explanations
The vigil clip fell first. Image analyst Jorge Uesu Jr. ran it through Sitrec, the sky simulation tool from Metabunk. The two lights matched Starlink satellites SL-30500 and SL-30866 flaring in sunlight. Tobler accepted it in part. "I believe both. But it's up to the investigator to filter the information."
A viral photo taken by João Teixeira on 1 January 2026 showed two silent lights over Boa Vista. Uesu identified them as the Moon and a streetlight aimed at a roof. He found the image altered and blamed automatic phone editing. A yellowish light filmed at Lameirão was proposed to be Jupiter. Samuel Carvalho rejects that. He says it moved and reacted to them. Portal Vigília noted that satellites cannot account for low lights that follow people.
Legacy
Edison Boaventura Júnior placed Barras on a Piauí "rota dos ovnis", beside Miguel Leão in 1986, where an object about 30 metres wide chased people at night. Portal Vigília drew comparisons with Operação Prato in Pará. By January 2026 the wave seemed to be fading, possibly with the rainy season. A final vigil on 20 January saw only cloud and rain.
