8 July 2025. Night over São Pedro, a quiet town in the Piracicaba region of São Paulo's interior. A resident points an infrared camera at the sky. Bright white points of light drift across the frame. One follows a path, changes heading, flares brighter and is gone. Another appears somewhere else. There is no engine noise. Only silence. Residents said the lights had been coming back since 2024. The footage spread across social media, then into the national press. Within days, two specialists offered two different answers. Neither one settled it.

Context

São Pedro is a town in the Piracicaba region of São Paulo's interior. Its residents say the lights did not start in 2025. They had been appearing since 2024, at least once a week, one resident told CNN Brasil. The Jornal de Piracicaba went further. Daily, it reported, always at the same time.

The sighting

The night of 8 July 2025. A Tuesday. CNN Brasil put the time at around 20:30. The Jornal de Piracicaba said residents placed it around 22h. The gap was never resolved.

A resident was filming the sky with an infrared camera. White points of light appeared, flickering, never all at once. Each followed a trajectory. Then it suddenly grew brighter and disappeared, and another light appeared elsewhere in the sky. To the resident, the movement did not look like an aircraft's. "What drew attention was that they were lights much brighter than an airplane's," the person who filmed told CNN Brasil.

And there was no sound. "Here it's silent, there's no airplane noise," a second resident said.

The witnesses

None of them were named. The footage was credited to "Andrey Moral," apparently a YouTube channel, though no outlet said who held the camera. Terra described a group of observers pointing infrared cameras at the horizon, which suggests ongoing sky watching rather than a chance recording. One resident had wondered about a rural drone, but could not judge how far away the lights were. When the Jornal de Piracicaba reported the video on 17 July, it noted that the images had not so far been explained by aeronautical or meteorological authorities.

Explanations

The answers came fast. They did not agree. Sérgio Mazzi of BRAMON, the Brazilian meteor monitoring network, spoke through astronomer Marcelo Zurita. "The video actually shows no UFO," he said. Mazzi saw airliners on final approach to Viracopos airport in Campinas, and compared the footage with Flightradar24 records. "On the night of 8 July there was heavy approach traffic," he said. Some pilots had to make detours. That, in his view, explained the changes of direction.

Marcelo De Cicco, planetary scientist and coordinator of the Exoss meteor project, partnered with the Observatório Nacional, disagreed. "The objects in the video are satellites," he told Terra. They shine because they reflect sunlight as they leave Earth's shadow cone. With a high resolution infrared camera, he said, "on any night you'll capture plenty of them." Neither specialist published supporting data.

Legacy

No official body examined the case. No hoax was alleged. Olhar Digital asked Viracopos airport for comment and was still waiting when it published. By September 2025, it was treating the aircraft explanation as the likely answer. Brazil's own records frame the moment. According to Arquivo Nacional records cited by CNN Brasil, the Brazilian Air Force received at least 26 UFO reports in 2024.

The region has its own history. In March 2008, near São Pedro, a father and son reported a large, round, dark object rising out of a canefield. Seventeen years later, the town was watching its sky again.
