An American supermarket tabloid, and a recurring stop on the trail of several strange stories. In 1981 it ran its own headline on the Altamaha-ha sighting at Smith Lake: "Monster Serpent Lurks in Murky American River." After the Caltrans crew's sea serpent off Stinson Beach in 1983, beachgoer Roland Curry, 19, told the paper it was his second sighting in less than a week. Then came 8 September 1992. Its tale of Soviet soldiers turned to stone was reprinted in Ukraine and translated by FBIS, ending up in CIA files. Critics later called it a textbook case of source laundering.
