Someone was always listening. The Foreign Broadcast Information Service, known as FBIS, was the US monitoring arm that sat within the CIA, translating foreign broadcasts and press into English. In 1963 it picked up a Portuguese broadcast about the Conde, Bahia report of a metal sphere with a body inside. In 1991 it transcribed a broadcast on Musa Manarov's Mir video as "Object Seen Floating Around Mir." In 1993 it translated a Holos Ukrayiny reprint of the Soviet soldiers turned to stone tale, a story first traced to Weekly World News. Its translations entered the CIA's files and were later released.
