Ghost rockets

Term 5 stories, 1933 to 1985

February 26, 1946. Observers in Finland reported something crossing the sky. Within months the reports had spread to Sweden, Norway and Denmark, and the press gave them a name: ghost rockets, or spökraketer. The Scandinavian ghost fliers of 1933-34 and 1936-37 are seen as their main pre-war forerunner. The name echoed for decades. Four pilots chasing a silver rocket south of Söderhamn in 1985 recalled it, and Greek researcher Thanassis Vempos linked the 1985 Rhodope coast cigar and the fiery cigar over Naxos, Lemnos and Corfu to the Greek ghost rockets of 1946.
