Context
Greece, December 1985. The Strategic Defense Initiative, the American programme the press called Star Wars, was a very popular topic. Space weapons were on everyone's mind. So when something fiery crossed the Greek sky, the officers who heard about it already had a theory ready.
The sighting
December 14, 1985. Three flight controllers were on duty at three islands. Naxos, in the Cyclades. Lemnos, in the northern Aegean. Corfu, in the Ionian Sea.
Independent from each other, all three reported a UFO like a "fiery cigar" passing above. One glowing, elongated body. One pass overhead. The sightings came close to each other in time.
The geography is what makes it strange. Corfu lies on the opposite side of mainland Greece from the two Aegean islands. Lemnos and Naxos are roughly 315 kilometres apart. Corfu and Naxos, about 550. Whatever it was, it was visible across most of the country at once.
Much was never written down. No size. No sound. No duration. No direction of travel. No beings, no landing, no contact.
The Air Force
The controllers filed their reports with Hellenic Air Force Headquarters. The Air Force estimated the object moved at over 3,000 miles per hour. That figure was the Air Force's, not the witnesses'. Officers expressed the opinion that it could have been a "space vehicle or American laser tests". Vempos gives no formal report number or later finding and does not name the three controllers.
A thin paper trail
The case rests on one contemporary source. The Athens daily Eleftherotypia reported it on 15 December 1985. In 2012, Greek researcher Thanassis Vempos summarised that report in his article "The Greek Ghost Rockets of 1946". It is the final entry in his chronology of later ghost rockets, coming after Kalymnos, 9 December 1959. The Wikipedia account is built on Vempos's summary.
Several Greek UFO chronologies skip 1985 entirely. A later retelling by Greek Reporter apparently dates the case to 1990 and adds radar and a "hard target". The original account is visual only. The 1990 date may be a conflation with the September 1990 "Greek Roswell" case near Atalanti. One more question remains open. It is not confirmed that Naxos had an airport in 1985, so the post there may have been a radio, navigation or military station rather than a tower.
Explanations
The officers' own answer was a spacecraft, or Strategic Defense Initiative laser tests. Neither was ever confirmed. The pattern also fits more ordinary suspects. A very high, bright meteor, or a re-entering satellite or rocket body, can look elongated and fiery and be seen over hundreds of kilometres at the same moment. Mid-December is also the annual peak of the Geminid meteor shower. Yet no record of a specific fireball or re-entry on 14 December 1985 has been found.
Legacy
It was not Greece's only cigar that year. On 3 October 1985, near Komotini, fifteen fishermen and farmers saw a "very dark flying object shaped like a huge cigar moving slowly". That was a separate event. Vempos places the fiery cigar in a longer story, a continuation of the 1946 Greek ghost rockets.
