Context
Thrace, autumn 1985. The Rhodope regional unit runs down to the Thracian Sea in the north-east corner of Greece. Along its shore sit small villages of fishermen and farmers. Molyvoti lies on a peninsula, the site of ancient Stryme. Imeros sits about 1.5 km inland from the coast. Komotini, the capital of the prefecture, lies to the north.
The sighting
October 3, 1985. About fifteen fishermen and farmers were standing on the shores of Molyvoti and Imeros. Above them was a flying object. It was very dark. It was shaped, in the words of the report, like a "huge cigar."
It did not race across the sky. It stood still for a while. Then it began to move, slowly, to the north. Inland, towards Komotini and the Rhodope mountains. The report mentions no lights and no sound. No beings. No sudden turns. Just a dark shape, huge and slow.
The witnesses were deeply impressed. The fishermen had planned their regular night fishing excursion. They cancelled it. They returned to their coastal villages and told people what they had seen.
The record
Two days later, on October 5, 1985, the Athens daily Eleftheros Typos carried the story. That article is the foundation of everything known about the case. No photographs, film, radar data or physical traces are recorded. No police, Hellenic Air Force or government investigation is on file. The witnesses are not named in any source available today.
In 2012, Greek researcher and journalist Thanassis Vempos summarised the report in a blog post, "The Greek Ghost Rockets of 1946." Wikipedia's page on UFO sightings in Greece cites that post. Along the way, the location drifted. Wikipedia describes the object "moving slowly in Komotini," turning a regional reference into a town. The original summary places the witnesses on the coast.
Explanations
No hoax has been alleged. No source proposes a conventional explanation either. The coast lies near the Turkish border, beneath the busy military airspace of the Cold War era. That is a line worth checking. It has never been established.
Legacy
Vempos filed the case under "Ghost Rockets of a Later Date," linking it in theme to the ghost rockets of 1946 over Greece and Scandinavia. It belongs to a remarkable Greek year. On December 14, 1985, air traffic controllers on Naxos, Lemnos and Corfu independently reported a "fiery cigar" passing overhead. The same year, Greek air-show pilots reported a "silver rocket."
The Rhodope cigar remains the quieter story. No radar. No pilots. Just about fifteen people on a shoreline, a huge dark shape in the sky, and a night of fishing that never happened.
