A town on the River Wear, historically County Durham, with old Bishopwearmouth now part of its city centre. In 1839 the Jobson family lived there, and their daughter Mary became the focus of a poltergeist case recorded by William Clanny of Sunderland Infirmary. Autumn 1883. The Sunderland Echo reported a ghostly apparition, and hundreds of Wearsiders took to the East End streets with bricks, sticks and torches. Officers from Hendon joined them. Ten years later, the steamer Umfuli, built in Sunderland by James Laing, met a sea serpent on her first voyage.
