Willington Mill

Place 3 stories, 1834 to 1840

A steam-powered flour mill on a semi-circular promontory at Willington Quay. It stood on the banks of Willington Gut, between Wallsend and North Shields. Joseph Procter, a Quaker corn miller, became a partner in 1829. Two years later he moved into the mill house with his wife Elizabeth. The haunting there drew Dr Edward Drury to an overnight vigil in 1840, and his name stayed tied to it when he later testified about the Bishopwearmouth poltergeist. Harry Price placed the case in Poltergeist Over England, beside Tedworth, Hinton Ampner and the Bealings Bells.
