A sceptical author, Trevor H. Hall looked at famous English hauntings and searched for ordinary causes. In 1958 he turned to Hinton Ampner. There, he proposed, underground water was mainly responsible for the noises. In 1965 his book New Light on Old Ghosts took up the Bealings Bells. Hall concluded that Moor was not a reliable witness. One of his servants, he argued, had duped him with a practical joke. That same year he favoured natural causes for the Epworth Rectory knockings.
