Sunday, 13 December 1868. A darkened room in Westminster. The medium Daniel Dunglas Home sat in trance while three young gentlemen kept to their seats. They heard him go into the next room. They heard the window there thrown up. Then Home appeared outside their own window, on the third storey, standing upright. He opened it and walked in quite coolly. Viscount Adare, the Master of Lindsay and Captain Charles Wynne all left written statements. Lindsay said he saw Home floating in the air. Wynne said he could swear to it. It became one of the most famous levitation claims in the history of Spiritualism. And one of the most disputed.

Context

By 1868 Daniel Dunglas Home was a celebrated medium. Born in Currie, Scotland, in 1833, he had already been attacked by Robert Browning in the poem "Mr Sludge, the Medium". His young friend Viscount Adare kept a record of their sittings. Seventy-eight of them, in the end.
