Morgawr

Term 8 stories, 1903 to 1977

Cornish for "sea giant". Morgawr is the name given to the sea serpent of Falmouth Bay, first reported by Mrs Scott and Mr Riley in 1975, before the name or the Mary F photographs existed. The name is generally credited to Tony "Doc" Shiels, artist, stage magician and self-described psychic. In 1976 a booklet appeared under the pen-name "Anthony Mawnan-Peller", and Shiels staged monster-raisings. The creature formed the backdrop to the Owlman of Mawnan sighting that year and to Shiels's 1977 Loch Ness photographs. In 2022 the folklorist Ronald M. James argued it began as a hoax and became genuine folklore.
