horse-eel

Term 3 stories, 1954 to 1968

In the bog country of Connemara, locals had a name for what some said lived in the small, dark loughs. The horse-eel, or peiste. It grew from older Irish folklore of the péist, a monster of the water. Georgina Carberry's 1954 sighting at Lough Fadda gave the name a case that stuck. In 1968, the Coyne family reported one at Lough Nahooin, and F. W. "Ted" Holiday felt the description fitted a giant eel. The tradition also surfaced in the debate over the three priests' 1960 sighting of the Lough Ree Monster.
