June 1954. Connemara, Co. Galway. Georgina Carberry, a librarian from Clifden and a keen angler, cycled out to Lough Fadda with three friends to fish for trout. They stopped for tea on a finger of land that almost splits the lake in half. Then one of them saw what looked like a man swimming out from an island. It was not a man. It came closer. Two big humps. A forked tail. A huge great mouth. Carberry called it "a horrible, long-backed creature." The friends went back to Clifden shaken and insisted that men with rifles be sent to the lake. Eleven years later, a monster hunter set off explosives on the shore.

Context

Irish folklore has long told of the péist, a monster of the water. In the small, dark lakes of Connemara, the stories never quite went away. One case gave them a name that stuck. The horse-eel.
