Tenerife

Place 3 stories, 1861 to 1976

An island of the Canaries, and a recurring landmark at sea. 30 November 1861. The French ship in the Alecton giant squid encounter met its creature forty leagues from Tenerife, and Sabin Berthelot, the French consul there, examined the fragment and reported to the Paris Academy of Sciences. In 1941 the three survivors of the SS Britannia raft giant squid attack were landed at Tenerife after five days adrift. Then, in 1976, several hundred people watched the Canary Islands sphere from Gran Canaria, Tenerife and other islands. The sphere drifted toward Tenerife before vanishing into a bluish spindle.
