The genus of the giant squid. Steenstrup named Architeuthis from Bahamas material of 1855, and the Newfoundland specimens of 1873 settled any doubt that such an animal existed. Older encounters were filed under it in hindsight. The Alecton crew's monster off Tenerife in 1861 is now accepted as one seen at the surface. Verrill accepted the Thimble Tickle stranding of 1878 as an Architeuthis, and the Dingle beast of 1673 ended up as Architeuthis monachus. Not every story fits. Ramming the tanker Brunswick in 1930 would have meant a sustained 20 to 25 knots, fast for Architeuthis.
