Académie des Sciences

Organisation 6 stories, 1790 to 1917

Paris. The Académie des Sciences, where strange reports came to be weighed by the scientific establishment. In 1846, François Arago, its permanent secretary, watched Angélique Cottin, the "electric girl" of Bouvigny, at the Paris Observatory. He described shocks like a Leyden jar's discharge and asked for a commission. In 1861, Pierre Flourens presented the Alecton's giant squid report on behalf of Marshal Vaillant, and it appeared in the Comptes rendus. Then, on 11 March 1929, Montandon brought de Loys's ape photograph before the Academy. He named it Ameranthropoides loysi. Critics soon called it an ordinary spider monkey.
