A deep-sea cephalopod, and a recurring suspect in the archive's sea monster cases. In 1854, Japetus Steenstrup argued that the Sea Monk of the Øresund was one, naming it Architeuthis monachus. It stands first on the list of giant squid specimens. 1873. An attack on a fishing boat at Portugal Cove is often called the first conclusive proof the animal exists. Later tellings blamed one for the SS Britannia raft attack of 1941, though historian Jonathan Dyer calls that a wartime urban legend. Others list the Santa Clara among ships that struck one.
