A large island of the Dutch East Indies, and the home ground of the orang pendek. The name means "short person". 1917. In the residency of Benkoelen, Resident L. C. Westenenk gathered reports from Dutch residents and Rejang villagers, including Oostingh's encounter at Bukit Kaba. In 1923 J. van Herwaarden described a sedapa in a tree at Poeloe Rimau, in the Palembang region. Decades later, in 1994, journalist Debbie Martyr reported her own sighting in Kerinci Seblat National Park. Sumatra also gave its name to a 1903 stone-fall that Charles Fort retold in Lo!.
