Boris Porshnev wrote from the Soviet hominology tradition. January 1958. At his initiative, the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences created a commission to study the snowman, chaired by the geologist Sergei Obruchev. He treated the captured wild man of Dagestan, reported by Dr. Vazgen Karapetyan, as key evidence of surviving degenerated Neanderthals. The 1958 Pamir expedition that followed A. G. Pronin's sightings found nothing, and his opponents disbanded the commission. He also criticised Laurence Waddell's bear explanation for footprints in Sikkim, calling them barefoot tracks.
