1921. Lt-Col. Charles Kenneth Howard-Bury led a British expedition into Tibet to reconnoitre Mount Everest, with George Mallory among his climbers. At the Lhakpa La, his party found hare and fox tracks. One mark looked like a human foot, and it puzzled him. The reconnaissance brought back the name metoh-kangmi, and with it the Abominable Snowman, though who coined the phrase is still argued over. Later cases are measured against his find, from Laurence Waddell's 1889 footprints in Sikkim to N. A. Tombazi's 1925 sighting near the Zemu Glacier.
