A BBC1 programme that kept turning up where the strange stories were. 20 February 1976. Nationwide aired Luke Casey's report on the Hexham Heads. It was shown once, and in 2024 BBC Archive restored it. At RAF Bircham Newton, a Nationwide interviewer spent the night and reported intense cold and banging doors. Its report on the Enfield Poltergeist put the choice starkly. Either 17 people, the police among them, had been hallucinating, or this was the best documented ghost story of all time.
