merhorse

Term 3 stories, 1746 to 1857

A horse's head. A flowing mane. The merhorse is one of the sea serpent types in Bernard Heuvelmans' classification, a maned animal with a horse-like head. Later writers have fitted older reports to it. Captain Lorenz von Ferry's sighting off Molde in 1746 matches the type, as does the anonymous officer's account of the HMS Plumper sea serpent in 1848, though how Heuvelmans classified that case is unconfirmed. In 2013, Dale Drinnon placed the Castilian sea serpent off St Helena, seen in 1857, among the merhorse reports.
