A researcher of old sea monsters and colonial-era hoaxes. September 2010. With Karl Shuker, Markus Hemmler found a lost photograph of Trunko, the white-furred carcass of Margate, on the Margate Business Association website. In 2022 he turned up a fifth picture, one showing a large fan-shaped projection. In 2026 he traced the Kasai Rex story to its German origin, showing the backgrounds came from Carl Georg Schillings' 1905 book with monitor lizards pasted on top. On the Gourock Sea Serpent of 1942, he wrote a two-part analysis for Netzwerk Kryptozoologie and concluded it was a basking shark.
