kongamato

Term 4 stories, 1925 to 1957

A flying terror of Zambian legend. In 1923 Frank H. Melland described it in In Witch-bound Africa, drawing on Kaonde informants in the Jiundu swamp who spoke of a reddish lizard with membranous bat-like wings and a long, toothed beak. They carried charms against it. In 1956 J. P. F. Brown reported his own sighting at Fort Rosebery, now the main modern eyewitness account behind the idea of a living pterosaur in Africa. The kongamato is often discussed beside the olitiau of Cameroon, from 1932, and the ahool of Mount Salak in Java.
