Cuero

Place 5 stories, 2004 to 2009

A small Texas town in DeWitt County, between San Antonio and Victoria. For years, something had been taking the chickens on Phylis Canion's ranch nearby. In 2007 she found a dead, hairless animal, photographed it and froze the head. Texas State University in San Marcos tested a sample and called it a coyote. Canion was not convinced. Cuero became the Chupacabra Capital of the World, selling T-shirts for the Summer of the Chupacabra. By 2008 it sat at the centre of the Texas chupacabra story, alongside the DeWitt County dashcam case and the earlier Elmendorf Beast.
