A town in Puerto Rico, and the place where the chupacabra was born. March 1995. Eight sheep were found with puncture wounds in Canóvanas. By August, around 150 animals had died there alone. That same month, Madelyne Tolentino looked out of her mother's window in Barrio Campo Rico and gave the creature the description that would define it. Armed mobs patrolled the streets, and mayor José Ramón "Chemo" Soto organized expeditions to find it, without success. Later cases, from the Vampire of Moca to the Malpaisillo Chupacabras in Nicaragua, are measured against what happened here.
