The island where the chupacabra legend was born. March 1995. Eight sheep were found dead in Puerto Rico, each reportedly with three puncture wounds to the chest and said to be drained of blood. By August, around 150 animals had died in Canóvanas alone, and more than 200 reports were made across the island that year. Madelyne Tolentino's sighting in Canóvanas became the defining description. The legend later spread beyond the island, to the Sweetwater killings of 1996 and to Phylis Canion's ranch near Cuero, Texas, in 2007.
