An Italian sceptics' group, CICAP turns up again and again when a strange case needs a second look. In 1995 its chemist Luigi Garlaschelli made a plaster figure weep salt water, testing the Weeping Madonna of Syracuse of 1953. At Civitavecchia the group said it was impossible to determine what happened. The weepings took place only in front of the statue's owner. In 2004 Massimo Polidoro looked at the Canneto di Caronia fires and noted they happened only when people were present. Ten years later, Francesco Grassi proposed radar chaff for the 1954 Florence stadium sighting.
