Via Mare. A single seaside street in Canneto di Caronia, on the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily. December 2003. A television in Antonino Pezzino's home reportedly exploded. Then the fires began. Fuse boxes. Air conditioners. Kitchen appliances, mattresses, car locks. One person was said to have watched an unplugged cable ignite. The power company cut the electricity. The fires kept coming. Between January and March 2004 there were 92 of them. The street's 39 residents were evacuated. Sceptics, scientists and a government working group came. An exorcist weighed in. A classified report spoke of electromagnetic weapons. Ten years later the fires returned. This time the Carabinieri were watching.

Context

Canneto is a seaside village of about 150 people in the municipality of Caronia, in the province of Messina. It sits on the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily, between Marina di Caronia and Santo Stefano di Camastra. One of its streets is called Via Mare.
