2 February 1995. Pantano, a rural district just north of Civitavecchia. Five-year-old Jessica Gregori called to her father. "Papa, Papa, come and look. The Madonnina is crying. There's blood everywhere!" In the garden grotto stood a small plaster statue of the Queen of Peace, bought in Medjugorje. A red liquid similar to blood was falling from its eyes. Within days, thousands of pilgrims were trampling the family's garden. Then, on 15 March, the statue wept again. This time in the hands of Bishop Girolamo Grillo, the man who had ordered it destroyed. Scans found no hidden mechanism. The blood was human. And male. No one has ever matched it to anyone.

Context

On 16 September 1994, Don Pablo Martín, parish priest of Sant'Agostino in Pantano, bought a plaster statue in a shop in Medjugorje. It showed the Regina della Pace, the Queen of Peace. It stood 42 cm tall. He gave it to the Gregori family, who belonged to his parish. It went into a niche in their garden. Pantano lies about 7 km north of the centre of Civitavecchia.
