November 1934. A fisherman found something on the beach of Henry Island, southwest of Prince Rupert. It was about 30 feet long. It had a head resembling that of a horse. A skin like sandpaper. A hide partly covered by hair and partly by spines or quills. Four flippers. Sea gulls had been feeding upon the flesh. The British Columbia coast was already caught up in talk of Cadborosaurus. Now, it seemed, there was a body. Dr. Neal Carter of the Dominion Fisheries Experimental Station brought the remains into Prince Rupert. Crowds came to look. A photographer came too. Within days, the scientists had another name for it.

Context

In 1933 and 1934, the coast of British Columbia had a sea serpent on its mind. Sightings of Cadborosaurus, the creature known as Caddy, filled the papers. In February 1934 The New York Times ran the headline "Sea Serpent Appears Off Vancouver Island." Everyone, it seemed, was watching the water.
