Thursday, 24 June 1965. 6:45 p.m. On Daunia Station, a grazing property near Nebo in central Queensland, grazier R.A. Roberts watched something cross the sky. It was dome shaped. A row of brilliant bluish white lights ran along it. A bright red tail burned at the rear, never changing in size or colour. It came from the west, turned about a mile away and raced off to the north-east. "I have never seen anything travel so fast," Roberts told police. Then came the strange part. A police constable walked the country afterwards. A long strip of bush looked as if it had been subjected to intense heat. Yet the leaves were still pliable and moist.

Context

In the winter of 1965, the Mackay hinterland of central Queensland was grazing country. Daunia Station was a property near Nebo. Its grazier was R.A. Roberts. What happened there survives in a single police file. Queensland State Archives holds it as ITM373641, "Unidentified Flying Objects". The same file records the 1961 Millaa Millaa light and the 1965 Castle Hill case at Townsville.
