Monday, 5 June 1961. A cloudless day over Millaa Millaa, a dairy town on Queensland's Atherton Tablelands. Two farmer brothers walked into the police station. Something had been hanging over the town since late morning. Senior Constable W. Anderson fetched his binoculars. He found a dull star, high in the daylight sky. Through the lenses it was a round sphere that turned and became cone shaped, its thin end glowing red. Then it flashed across the sky and was gone in about two seconds. Later, it was back exactly where it had been. Police filed a report. The RAAF sent an aircraft. It found nothing.

Context

Millaa Millaa is a small dairy-farming town on the southern Atherton Tablelands, about 98 km south-west of Cairns. In June 1961 its officer in charge of police was Senior Constable W. Anderson. The police telegrams of the day spelled the town "Milla Milla".

The sighting

About 11:30 am on 5 June 1961, farmers William and Arthur Beechino saw an object in the sky over the town. It "was moving about at a high altitude but when reported was more or less stationary". At 12:55 pm they took their story to Anderson.

He got his binoculars. He located the object "about half-way between the zenith and the horizon". To the naked eye it was "a dull star". Through the lenses, "it appeared as a round sphere which turned and became cone shaped." Then: "At the same time, the thin end of the cone appeared to turn a red colour."

Terrance Seary, head teacher at the Millaa Millaa State School and an ex-RAAF navigator, watched it too, through binoculars, in the company of townspeople. Several residents with late model cameras tried to photograph it. None could get the object into focus.

The dashes

1:24 pm. According to the police report, "it commenced to turn and glow red and then move towards the East". It moved slowly for about 3 feet. Then "it suddenly picked up speed and flashed across the sky in an Easterly direction" at "terrific speed", and "disappeared in about 2 seconds".

Then it was back. "It was found that the object had returned to its original position." Nobody saw the return. At 1:40 pm it flashed away to the south-east. At 1:45 pm it went south. At 2 pm it travelled north-east. Each time it came back. At 2:50 pm it moved west for the last time and was lost in haze on the western horizon.

Investigation

Anderson reported in writing. The meteorological station at Cairns Airport was told of the object but was unable to assist. Inspectors Gill in Cairns and Cantwell in Townsville were advised. At RAAF Headquarters Townsville, Flight Lieutenant Darby reported that Pilot Officer Stewart was leaving in a Winjeel aircraft to search the area. According to researcher Keith Basterfield, working from the RAAF file, the aircraft was over the area between 1620 and 1635. It reported no sighting. The object had been gone for well over an hour.

Explanations

Basterfield's catalogue of Australian reports rates the case "IFO?", probably identified. "A review of the RAAF files suggests it may have been a stratospheric balloon," it says. No specific balloon flight is named. A balloon could fit a dull star hanging for hours in a cloudless sky, and a slow final drift west into haze. The two second dashes and the unseen returns are harder to fit. Perhaps the observers lost and found a faint point again in hand-held binoculars. That remains a suggestion, not a finding.

Legacy

No 1961 newspaper story about the sighting has surfaced. The paper trail survives in police correspondence at the Queensland State Archives and in a RAAF file at the National Archives of Australia. The same police file holds a report from Mount Garnet days later, where a truck driver watched a silent object pass almost over his house. In November 2025 the Queensland State Archives brought the Millaa Millaa report back into the light.
