Simon Young, a folklorist and Dr, returns to old cases and asks what really happened. In 2017 he appealed through the Nottingham Post for the Wollaton Park witnesses, offering absolute anonymity. No one came forward. In 2022 he edited The Wollaton Gnomes: A Nottingham Fairy Mystery, which gives no single verdict and keeps three possibilities open. In 2025, writing in the journal Shima, he turned to the Deerness Mermaid of Orkney. His conclusion was an unusual seal, perhaps a freak of nature. Yet he admits no known seal matches its long neck.
