In these stories, the U.S. Forest Service turns up twice in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. July 1924. Miners reported a night attack by apemen near Mount St. Helens, and Forest Service rangers J.H. Huffman and William Welch climbed down into Ape Canyon. They found nothing. They showed how 14-inch footprints could be faked and concluded the miners had probably placed the stones themselves. Decades later, in 1982, Paul Freeman was patrolling the restricted Mill Creek watershed in the Umatilla National Forest for the agency when he reported his Blue Mountains Bigfoot sighting.
