A volcano in Skamania County, Washington. Summer, 1924. Five prospectors working the Vander White claim on its slopes reported a clash with the mountain devils of Mount St. Helens, an event the archive tells in Ape Canyon "Apemen" Attack and The Battle of Ape Canyon. Forest Service rangers found nothing in the gorge and suspected the miners themselves. Fred Beck told his full story in 1967, in I Fought the Apemen of Mount St. Helens. Decades later, the Batsquatch legend from Lake Kapowsin drifted south to the mountain too.
