Florida's own Bigfoot. Locals call it the skunk ape, a creature five to seven feet tall with dark red to black fur. Its busiest years came between 1971 and 1975, with a wave of reports around Broward County. One January night in 1974, Richard Lee Smith's car struck one on U.S. 27. In 1997, near Ochopee, Vince Doerr photographed something he never claimed was the skunk ape. Then came the Myakka photographs of 2000, which investigators later judged to be a costume. Sceptics point to black bears, and to hoaxes.
