Everglades

Place 4 stories, 1965 to 1974

A vast Florida swamp sits behind three very different stories in the archive. March 1965. Rancher and former constable James W. Flynn took four dogs and a swamp buggy deep into the Everglades, beyond the road's end, in the Everglades Light Beam Encounter. Seven years later, on 29 December 1972, Eastern Air Lines Flight 401 struck the Everglades on approach to Miami, killing 101 of 176 aboard, and ghost stories followed. In 1974, U.S. Route 27 along the swamp's eastern edge became the scene of Richard Lee Smith's skunk ape collision.
