Royal Geographical Society

Organisation 3 stories, 1907 to 1951

A learned society of explorers and surveyors, its name runs quietly through some of the archive's strangest expedition stories. Early 1907. Major Percy Harrison Fawcett was on his first boundary survey for the Royal Geographical Society and the Bolivian government, travelling the Rio Abunã. In 1925, N. A. Tombazi, a photographer and geologist described as a member, led an expedition to the glaciers of Kangchenjunga in the Sikkim Himalaya. The Society also holds the photographs of the Shipton and Ward footprints from the Menlung Glacier in 1951. What made those tracks has never been settled.
