Two very different places share this name in the archive. Phoenix, Arizona, was home in the summer of 1947 to William Albert Rhodes, an inventor, musician, amateur astronomer and photographer. On 9 July, the Arizona Republic ran his two pictures on its front page, calling the object a mystery whatsis photographed over Phoenix. The FBI had already obtained copies. Half a world away lies Phoenix, a township about 25 km north-west of central Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. Once a sugarcane estate, its name is linked with Gandhi's Phoenix Settlement. In the winter of 2004 it became the setting for a shape-changing light.
