William Anstruther-Gray asked Sir Godfrey Collins, Secretary of State for Scotland, to order an investigation into the Loch Ness Monster after Hugh Gray's photograph. Collins left it to scientists and the Press. In 1953 MPs raised the RAF West Malling objects, and Nigel Birch blamed two experimental meteorological balloons. The House laughed. On 8 November 1967 Peter Mills pressed the Devon flying cross case, and Merlyn Rees answered that none of the unidentified lights was an alien object.
