Eglin AFB

Place 4 stories, 1949 to 1976

An air force base in the Florida Panhandle, and a name that keeps surfacing in the archive. January 27, 1949. Captain Sames, acting chief of the Aircraft Branch at Eglin AFB, was driving Cortez Road with his wife about 250 miles from home when they watched a strange object. Two decades later the base came up again. In 2016 Carl G. "Jere" Justus linked Jimmy Carter's 1969 Leary sighting to a barium cloud from a rocket launched at Eglin on January 6, 1969. The base also appears in a 1976 series of NMCC memos, alongside Cannon AFB and the Fort Ritchie reports.
