A town in New Mexico, close to the White Sands Proving Ground. In August 1949 it was home to Clyde W. Tombaugh, the astronomer who had discovered Pluto in 1930. He lived there with his wife, Patricia. His sighting at Las Cruces, a pattern of window-like lights, is cited alongside the 1949 Cortez Road object reported by Captain Sames of Eglin AFB. July 4, 1950. Daniel Fry missed the last bus to the town's Independence Day celebrations. That evening he walked out toward the Organ Mountains, and his White Sands saucer ride began.
